Things to know when Check in Online domestically
Many domestic passengers still arrive early at the airport just to stand in long lines for check in without realizing that they can completely save time and avoid crowds by checking in online. However, not everyone knows how to do it properly or understands the necessary steps to avoid last minute trouble. Understanding the online check in process not only makes the journey more convenient but also helps minimize risks such as losing seats, incorrect information, denial of boarding, or unnecessary costs.
Online check in is a method where passengers complete flight procedures before arriving at the airport. This process applies to valid flight tickets with booking codes and complete information and must be done within the permitted time frame (usually from 24 hours to 1 hour before departure depending on the airline). It can be done through websites, mobile apps, confirmation emails, or some OTA platforms. Each domestic airline in Vietnam has its own policy regarding timing, method, and steps.
Start with the most essential information: you need a booking code (PNR), full name matching your ID, flight details, and an internet connected device. Every passenger must prepare their national ID, passport, birth certificate, or other accepted identification to verify identity at the security checkpoint and boarding gate.
The most common method is to check in via the official app or website of the airline. After accessing the “Online Check in” section, enter the booking code and passenger name. The system will display flight details, allow selection of passengers (for group bookings), seat selection (if available), and confirmation. Once completed, the system will send the electronic boarding pass via email, text message, or app. You can save it as an image, PDF, QR code, or add it to a digital wallet (Apple Wallet, Google Wallet).
If the boarding pass is not received, check your spam folder, phone storage, or log back in to download it. If there is no QR code or if it does not display properly, go to the check in counter for reprinting. Most domestic airlines still allow in person check in if technical issues occur.
Airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietjet Air, and Vietravel Airlines have different check in time frames. Vietnam Airlines allows check in from 24 hours to 1 hour before the flight, Bamboo from 24 to 1 hour, and Vietjet from 24 to 3 hours. If you try to check in too early or too late, the system may show an error or deny access.
For elderly passengers or those not familiar with technology, it is recommended to get help from family members and complete the process at home. If online check in is not possible, you can still arrive early at the airport and complete the procedure at the check in counter. Major airports like Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Da Nang, and Cam Ranh also have self service kiosks to support automatic check in in the terminal lobby.
If traveling with elderly people or children under 14, make sure to bring appropriate documents such as birth certificates, household registration, guardian confirmation, or authorization documents if not accompanied by parents. Many airlines do not allow online check in for children under 2 years old, passengers with disabilities needing assistance, or passengers with special requests such as purchasing extra seats.
Once you have checked in successfully and do not need to check luggage, you can go straight to the security gate by presenting your boarding pass and ID. If you have checked luggage, you must still go to the baggage drop counter within the designated time (usually closes 40 minutes before departure). For peak hour flights, it is advisable to arrive 90 to 120 minutes early even if you have already checked in online.
Common mistakes to avoid include entering the wrong name (missing accents, incorrect order), selecting the wrong gender, choosing the wrong flight, using expired documents, arriving late at the airport, or failing to open the QR code. These errors may cause denial of boarding even if check in was completed online. To prevent issues, double check every step, verify your ticket and personal documents, and test opening the QR code before leaving home.
Some practical tips to ensure a smooth process: for groups of three or more, check in together to select nearby seats. Save your boarding pass in multiple locations such as your phone, email, or screenshots. If the app fails, switch to the web browser. If internet is lost at the airport, go to the help desk to reprint the QR code or verify your information. If you forget to check in or lose your booking code, you can retrieve it using the phone number or email used during booking.
A common situation is that passengers who have checked in online still need to queue at the airport to drop off baggage. In such cases, go to the priority counters if available (for example, some airlines offer priority lanes for online check in passengers, frequent flyer members, or premium ticket holders). If you have only light carry on baggage, you can go straight to the security gate after entering the terminal.
Some passengers believe that no check in is needed if they only have carry on baggage, but in reality, you still need a valid boarding pass. Without a QR code or printed boarding pass, you may be denied at the security gate. Do not let your phone run out of battery; bring a power bank or print the boarding pass in case the system fails to recognize your device.
In rare cases such as booking errors, unrecognized codes, or security restrictions, go calmly to the airline counter to verify your information. Bring proof of booking, confirmation emails, or payment statements to help resolve the issue faster.
In conclusion, online check in for domestic flights is a smart choice that saves time and reduces pressure at the airport, especially during peak hours. With the right information, correct steps, and a backup plan, passengers can complete the check in process easily and worry free.
The most important thing to remember is to always verify your name, QR code, and personal documents before leaving home. If an error occurs, do not try repeatedly but switch to another method. In all cases, preparation and initiative are the key factors that ensure a smooth and uninterrupted journey.
